The word Narali means coconut and Purnima means full moon day. Coconut has special significance on this day. The festival of Narali Purnima coincides with other festivals such as Shravani Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Kajari Purnima. Although the traditions and cultures may differ, the significance of the festivals remains the same. In North India the festival of Rakhi is celebrated on the day of Raksha Bandhan i.e. the full moon of Shravan,
while in South India the festival of Coconut Purnima is celebrated in the coastal areas.

On the day of Narali Purnima, devotees worship Lord Varuna. Coconut is offered to the god of the sea on this occasion. It is believed that performing puja rituals on Shravan Purnima pleases Lord Varuna. Devotees seek protection from all dangers of the sea. Upanayana and Yagyopaveet rituals are among the most widely followed rituals. Devotees also worship Lord Shiva on Narali Purnima as it is believed that the three eyes of the coconut represent the Lord Shiva.

Every section of the society in South India celebrates this festival in its own way. On this day the wearers of the thread change their thread. For this reason this festival is also called Abitam. It is also called Shravani or Rishi Tarpan. The festival of Narali Purnima is celebrated exclusively by the Hindu fishermen community . Narali Purnima Puja Method

Varuna, the god of water and sea, is especially worshiped on the day of Narali Purnima. On this day, it is customary to offer coconut to Varun Dev. It is believed that performing puja rituals on Shravan Purnima pleases Lord Varuna and protects him from all dangers of the ocean. The festival of Narali Purnima is especially celebrated by the people of the fishing community living in the coastal region. Lord Shiva is also worshiped on this day. It is believed that the three eyes of the coconut are a symbol of the three-eyed Shiva and the month of Sawan is the favorite month of Lord Shiva. Coconut and his favorite things are offered to Lord Shiva on this day.
