About Harela

Harela 2022 : Harela is a festival of greenery, peace, prosperity and environmental conservation Harela means ‘day of green’ and is celebrated in the month of Shravan (the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar) to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. People across Uttarakhand, especially the Kumaun region, associate greenery with prosperity.

Harela seeds are seeded nine day before the festival and they are harvested on the ninth day and with the harvested leafs we do puja of all the family members. and make dishesh .

Harela Song

On the day of the festival the locals sing the following lines in kumaoni language:

“Ji raiya, jagi raiya, tisteya, panpiya,

Dub jaisi hari jad ho, byar jas phaiye,

Himalaya me hyun chan tak,

Ganhjyu me pani chhan tak,

Yo din or yo mas bhetne raiya.”

The lyrics translate to: You live long, be aware, may this day of Harela come many times in your life, and your lineage and family prosper like the harvested crop, your life expands like the earth, grows tall like the sky, you remain on this earth till the snow on the Himalayas and the Holy Ganga and Yamuna Rivers flow from the Himalayas.

Harela 2022 Date and Holiday is Uttarakhand

In 2020, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat approved the proposal to declare July 16th as a public holiday. In the ongoing calendar of annual holidays the state government has declared an unrestricted holiday on Harela.

When is the Harela festival celebrated?

Although most of the festivals of Hindu religion in India are related to the lunar calendar (like Vikram Samvat), only then their date keeps changing in the Gregorian calendar. But the Harela festival is celebrated on the day of kark Sankranti in the month of Shravan, which does not depend on the movement of the moon, but depends on the direction of the sun from the earth. That’s why it falls on 16 or 17 July every year. On this day the sun enters kark.
