Due to their childlessness, Sudeha arranged for her younger sister, Ghushma, to marry Sudharma. Ghushma was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva, and every day she would make 100 clay Shiva Lingas, worship them, and immerse them in a nearby pond.

By the grace of her devotion to Lord Shiva, Ghushma was blessed with a son. However, out of jealousy, Sudeha threw the child into the pond. By the grace of Ghushma’s unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva, the child was found alive. it is believed that Lord Shiva was appeared at the very spot where the child was found.

This temple, situated on the seashore in Tamil Nadu, is considered to belong to the Ramayana era. According to legend, Lord Rama, the king of Ayodhya, constructed a Shivling out of sand at this very spot and meditated upon Lord Shiva before embarking on his battle against Ravana, seeking victory. Following this, Lord Shiva appeared here in the form of light (Jyoti). It is also believed that after returning victorious from Lanka, sages advised Lord Rama to perform penance for the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). He instructed Hanuman to bring a Shivling from Mount Kailash. However, when Hanuman was delayed, Mother Sita crafted a Shivling herself, which Lord Rama worshipped. That Shivling is now known as Rameshwaram. Later, the Shivling brought by Hanuman was also installed nearby and is called Hanumadheeshwar.
